Abstract

In addition to offering an introduction to corpus and corpus linguistics this article describes how corpus linguistics can help to compile dictionaries. Taking into account Noam Chomsky's views on grammar and corpus, this article discusses the views on descriptivism, prescriptivism, empiricism and rationalism with  reference to grammar and lexicography. An important issue in lexicography is what makes a dictionary authentic and why an innate and intropspective knowledge of language alone cnnot  be relied upon as evidence.
